Acer 5536G no boot, all voltages OK.

Post by anandvsalunke »

Acer 5536G motherboard 08252-2 came in with no boot. All voltages checked OK.
BIOS flashed, but no change.
Connected debug card to LPC bus and found post code "00", which means the processor is not running the BIOS.
Checked the CPU reset lines on scope and found normal. At this point, it is either broken A-link, HT link or bad South bridge, North Bridge or CPU at last.

Checked impedances of A-link and HT link and all found normal, no shorts or open.

The very first transaction after receiving all core voltages and reset should be the CPU execute BIOS. So I suspected CPU at first. Since i did not have spare CPU, I decided to heat the CPU die a little bit to see, if that helps. It's a well known secrete that the heat temporarily restores minor silicon defects. The hot air at 230 DegC at 10mm distance from CPU for like 2-3 minutes and I reassembled everything. And few minutes later I was greeted by the Acer logo..fault confirmed.
